NUMBER ONE: Passion
Born Steven Demetre Georgiou on the 21st July 1948 in Marylebone, London, he was born to a Swedish mother and a Greek father, who ran a restaurant in central London. While at Hammersmith College, he developed an interest in folk music and rock & roll, leading him to start performing under the name Steve Adams. He would catch the attention of former The Springfields band member Mike Hurst, who cut his composition I Love My Dog. The demo had prompted Decca Records to sign Yusuf on to the newly formed Deram subsidiary. It was by this time that he would start going by the stage name “Cat Stevens” after a girlfriend told him, he had eyes like a cat. I Love My Dog would peak in the Top 40 of the British charts in October 1966. His next single, Matthew and Son, entered the charts in January 1967 just shy of the number one spot. He would also develop his reputation as a writer during this period as the song, Here Comes My Baby, would showcase his talents as a songwriter for The Tremeloes, where it would reach the Top 5 in February that year, alongside just peaking outside of the Top 10 of the American charts.

NUMBER TWO: Confidence
When his music career took an unforeseen downward turn, Yusuf did not forsake his abilities as a songwriter. Rather, he would expand them, with the likes of Jimmy Cliff entering the British Top 10 with his version of Wild World. He was considered comparable to some of the most important folk-rock songwriters and singers of the 70s, such as James Taylor and Carole King. On top of hits such as Moonshadow, and Peace Train, which made the US Top 40 and number one on the easy-listening charts in the US respectively, he would follow both up with Morning has Broken, an adaption of a hymn, which became Yusuf’s next top 10 hit on both sides of the pond.

NUMBER THREE: Discipline
To lessen the strains of stardom, Yusuf left the UK in 1973, and moved to Brazil. This was because he wanted to donate what he had earnt to charity instead. On top of this, he gave less interviews during his years in Brazil, performing less and less as he became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. However, he didn’t stop making music altogether. His 1973 single, The Hurt, made it into the US Top 40 and his seventh album, Foreigner, peaked at number five in both the UK and US charts, achieving Gold instantly. In the same year as both his single and album, he would do a 90-minute performance on the American TV Show, In Concert.

NUMBER FOUR: Resilience
In 1977, Yusuf would formally become a Muslim and officially change his name to Yusuf Islam. His turning point, came when he nearly drowned off the coast of Malibu, California in 1976 where he openly declared that he would serve God if his life was saved. During his studies of the Quran, he identified much with the story of Joseph through how he found parallels within himself, and the music business. From there, he would release his final Cat Stevens album, Back to Earth, in 1978. Where it performed modestly, in sales, It was with that he would announce his retirement from pop music and start a family of five with Fauzia Mubarak Ali, whom he married in 1979.

NUMBER FIVE: Humility
In the 90s, Yusuf noticed there were not many educational resources for children to learn about Islam. In response, Yusuf would write and produce the children’s album, A is for Allah, in 2000 with the help of South African singer-songwriter Zain Bhikha. He would also establish his own label, Jamal Records, and Mountain of Light Productions where a percentage of the projects goes towards his Small Kindness charity.
