According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Manchester United are still looking to bring in Sergino Dest before the end of the transfer deadline, which would allow them to ship off outcast Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Despite spending big on players like Lisandro Martinez and Antony, it looks like Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad further, specifically in defence as the club remain on the lookout for a new right-back. While they have the duo of Diogo Dalot and Wan-Bissaka, manager Erik ten Hag is not thought to be convinced with the latter and is willing to let the Englishman go. However, Bailey believes that they will only let him go if they can bring a replacement in, with Dest in talks to sign. It looks like a deal is very possible as it was reported earlier in the window that Barcelona boss Xavi is looking to sell the right-back in an effort to raise funds so they can register some of their recent incomings. Speaking about a potential deal for the American, Bailey told the All For United podcast: “I think it’s 50/50. I think if United can get a replacement in, then he’ll [Wan-Bissaka] go. I think they don’t want to leave themselves short. So in that regard, I think they’re looking to bring Sergino Dest in, still talking to him. “So I think that’s the way they are going to do it. I think that’s the way they want to do it, so I think Dest talks are ongoing, Barca are trying to get him out. If they get him in, then I think Wan-Bissaka will be allowed to go.” Interestingly, the defender has a crazy €400m (£346m) release clause. There is no doubt the Red Devils need to upgrade their right-back position, as rolling into the season with Dalot and Wan-Bissaka is not going to help them get into the top four and eventually try to challenge for the Premier League title again – certainly not based on last season’s defensive performances where they ended the season with a goal difference of zero in the league. However, it looks like a move for the youngster could be out of the question, as it was recently reported Ten Hag confirmed the club will not be looking to bring in any more players after Antony and Martin Dubravka. But when looking at Dest’s stats, maybe they should have a rethink. Last season, despite only picking up four assists in 31 apperances, Dest ranked in the 98th percentile for progressive carries and dribbles completed, as well as in the 92nd for touches in the attacking penalty area compared to players in his position within Europe’s top five leagues over the past year (as per FBref). While his defence output is not exactly incredible – with the 21-year-old only ranking in the 77th percentile for tackles and 67th for pressures – he has the attacking ability that could make him a very dangerous wing-back and a nightmare for teams to deal with, so we feel he could be a worthy signing for the club if they decide to change their apparent stance. |
