Federal student loans were first offered in 1958 under the National Defense Education Act, BUT they were only available to students studying engineering, science, or education.

The program was established in response to the Soviet Union's launch of the Sputnik satellite and was meant to address the widespread perception that the US had fallen behind in science and tech.

Student loans became more widely accessible in the 1960s under the Higher Education Act of 1965, with the goal to encourage social mobility and equal opportunity for everyone.
