Whether on the silver screen or set against the eternal darkness of space, few brands have had the impact Omega has enjoyed. Though Omega has been known for its high-quality watches for well over a century and a half (the company takes its present name from its successful Omega caliber), their notoriety shot through the roof thanks to the brand's three most important collaborations — The Olympic games, NASA’s Apollo missions, and the venerable British spy James Bond. This weekend Tim focuses on two of these collaborations. The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 13 45th Anniversary “Silver Snoopy II” celebrates possibly one of the most consequential moments in the history of the Speedmaster — the critical 14-second burn that allowed the damaged Apollo 13 vessel to adjust course and reach home. In what could have been the darkest moment of the Apollo program, the Apollo 13 mission has instead been considered one of its finest, proving the capacity humanity has when drawn together against a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. On the wrists of the three men aboard the seemingly doomed ship was the same watch that graced the wrist of each astronaut who boarded an Apollo mission, the Omega Speedmaster. In light of the need to conserve power, all unnecessary equipment in the Apollo 13 spacecraft (which already operated with minimal computer equipment) was shut off, leaving the Omega Speedmaster as the last, best piece of timing equipment on board the ship. In the aftermath of the landing, Omega was awarded a Silver Snoopy award — the highest honor awarded by the NASA astronaut corps as thanks for a job well done in service of their mission. This stunning chronograph, released in 2015, marked the 45th anniversary of the mission that earned that award, and is replete with detail that honors that mission.
