Xerxes I was the fourth king of the Achaemenid Empire and ruled from 486 to 465 BCE. He is best known for launching the second invasion on Greece, which resulted in the famous battles of Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. Xerxes was also responsible for the construction of numerous monumental buildings and made significant improvements to Persian infrastructure. Despite achieving many military and architectural feats, Xerxes' reign was marked by unrest, including rebellions in Babylon and Egypt. He ultimately died a violent death, assassinated by his own courtier in 465 BCE.
