Typography is one of those subjects that is difficult to teach well. It’s relatively easy for most of us to give designers the theory behind type and the beginning steps to practice. Exceptional instructors teach students how to transform those steps into a well-choreographed dance that captures the imaginations of readers and creates the visual voice of the story. During this talk, we’ll take a look at what’s working and not working in contemporary typography instruction, we’ll dissect design projects and critical analysis, and we’ll hear from the students to learn from the learners themselves about how they were able to close the gap between education and application.

In this episode, we’ll chat with Abby Guido, Assistant Professor in Graphic and Interactive Design, and her recent students Jackie and Marissa, from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Jackie Jensen (http://jackiejensendesign.com/) Jackie has been a graphic designer since she thought that making TV graphics for her high school news channel was a practical career path. Since then she’s grown to love all aspects of design from spot illustrations to full brands. She is a recent grad of the Graphic & Interactive Design program at Tyler School of Art with no X-acto blade injuries so you could say things went pretty well.

Marissa Raybuck (https://marissaraybuck.com/) Marissa is a Philadelphia-based graphic designer who specializes in illustration, editorial layout, and interactive design. She has an affinity for IMDb, Wikipedia, and any pop culture history. In particular, she became exceptionally animated when talking about art history, the Fast and Furious franchise, or her pets. She answers personal phone calls by saying “Jello,” laugh too hard at dad jokes, and has a growing collection of pizza-centric t-shirts.

Abby Guido (http://www.abbyryandesign.com/) Abby Guido is an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the Graphic and Interactive Department (GAID) at Tyler School of Art, Temple University and creative director of Abby Ryan Design, a design studio focused on branding, design for the screen and information design (infographics). Two infographics she designed, “50 Years, 50 Toy’s,” and “Chris and Abby Get Married,” were featured in the 2014 book, Visual Families, published by Gestalten in Berlin, Germany. “50 Years, 50 Toys” also went viral in the holiday season of 2013, being featured on over 200 websites worldwide. Her work has also been included in various design publications including Print Design Annual, Society of Publication Design Annual, Communication Arts Design Annual, Graphis, How Magazine Self Promo Annual Competition, and the Art Directors Club of New York.
