The Future of the American University: Civic Education, Past and Present

video thumbnail
Even as civic life is breaking down on college campuses, university-level civic education is making a comeback. Innovative projects are underway at Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University and in entirely new academic units at public universities in Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. As Johns Hopkins President Ronald J. Daniels notes, however, “the history of civic education in colleges and universities is one defined . . . by repeated bursts of civic resolve that have run aground or lost focus.”

AEI’s third annual Future of the American University Conference will give historical context to today’s efforts to renew civic education. Please join us for an event where scholars of the history of civics and those leading efforts to renew this field of study will discuss what contemporary efforts can learn from the past.
