2 dead in Peru protests as President Boluarte calls for elections in 2024

Peru's interim president Dina Boluarte, who replaced Pedro Castillo following his ouster, said Monday she would be putting forward a bill to Congress to move up general elections to 2024, following protests on Sunday that left two dead.

The move is a reversal for Boluarte, who originally said she should be allowed to hold the office for the remaining three-and-a-half years of her predecessor's term.

"I deeply regret the death of our compatriots in Andahuaylas, Apurimac, my homeland. I express my heartfelt condolences to their families," she said in a national address.

Demonstrators have called for elections for days rather than allow Boluarte to stay in power until 2026, after Congress sacked Castillo and had him arrested for attempting to dissolve the legislature in an effort to prevent an impeachment vote against him. The protesters, many of whom are Castillo supporters, have also called for Congress to be shuttered.
