Bomdila Monastery, also known as GRL Monastery (Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery), is a revered Buddhist monastery situated in Bomdila town of the West Kameng district in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The monastery is perched on a hilltop, providing panoramic views of the town and the surrounding valleys. Bomdila Monastery was established in 1965 by the 12th reincarnate of the Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, Rigzin Tenpa Wangchuk. The monastery is affiliated with the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is home to more than 200 monks. The monastery has three sections - the main prayer hall, the upper Gonpa, and the lower Gonpa. The main prayer hall, known as Dukhang, is decorated with elaborate murals and paintings depicting the life of Lord Buddha and other important figures in Buddhist mythology. The hall also houses a statue of Lord Buddha, flanked by statues of Guru Padmasambhava and Lord Ganesha. Visitors can participate in the daily prayer sessions held at the prayer hall and learn about the rituals and practices of Tibetan Buddhism. The upper Gonpa houses a collection of ancient Buddhist manuscripts, scriptures, and thangkas (religious paintings on cloth). The lower Gonpa, also known as the Dolma Lhakang, is dedicated to the female deity Tara, who is believed to protect and guide the followers of Buddhism. Apart from its religious significance, Bomdila Monastery is also a popular tourist destination for its scenic location and picturesque surroundings. The monastery is surrounded by lush green forests, snow-capped mountains, and the sparkling Kameng river. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the monastery, enjoying the natural beauty and tranquility of the place. Bomdila Monastery also hosts an annual festival, the Torgya Festival, which is celebrated with great pomp and show by the locals and the monks. The festival is marked by traditional music and dance performances, colorful processions, and the burning of effigies symbolizing evil spirits. Bomdila Monastery is a must-visit destination for those interested in Buddhism, history, and culture. The monastery offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Arunachal Pradesh, and is a perfect place to spend a peaceful and meditative day amidst nature.
