At least 40 Indian nationals were killed and dozens more injured on Wednesday in a devastating fire in a building in southern Kuwait housing Indian workers, said officials, adding the number of casualties is expected to rise.
The fire in the Al-Mangaf building, a residence for workers, was reported to authorities in Al-Ahmadi governorate at 4:30am, and most of the deaths were due to smoke inhalation while the residents were asleep, reports in the Kuwaiti media said.
NBTC group, an engineering and construction firm, rented the building to house more than 195 workers, most of them Indians from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and northern states. Those who died ranged in age between 20 and 50 years, the reports said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a review meeting on the fire tragedy in Kuwait in which a number of Indian nationals died and many were injured, at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi earlier today.

Doda encounter (June12): A policeman has been injured in an exchange of fire with militants in Kirlu top forests of Doda district in Jammu. Police says a search operation was launched on specific information by the SOG Gandoh. “During the initial fire one ct of JKP namely Fareed got injured and is being shifted to hospital, operation is going on in the area,” Doda police said.
Kathua encounter: 2 terrorists have been killed in the encounter. Searches extended to nearby villagers to eliminate any possibility of more terrorists hiding in the area. The group has recently infiltrated and was carrying sophisticated weapons including M4 carbine which is mostly used to US forces. One CRPF personal was also killed in action. The searches continue in the area while forces are on alert in other districts too.
