The first reason I Iove The Book of Five Rings is that it’s very personal. Musashi actually died a few weeks after writing the book, which only makes it more poignant and powerful. I’m amazed at how his writing has lived on to inspire students he would never meet--like me!

The second reason I love this book is because it’s short. No poems. No mumbo jumbo. He gets right to the point. Musashi’s writing style tells you everything you need to know about his fighting style.

The third reason I love The Book of Five Rings is the advice itself. Musashi criticizes commercial schools, fancy moves, and so-called secret techniques. Keep in mind, that was 350 years ago!

But the greatest lesson I took away was this: Advice is meaningless without practice. Musashi tells the reader—

It is impossible to write about this in detail.
You must train constantly.
You must research this well.
You must study hard.

Even though Musashi is giving advice, he understands the limitations of giving advice. He wants you to gain your own experience, not just read about his experience.

Of course, as a teacher, I believe in offering advice. But as I discussed in Podcast #74, Inspiration and Motivation, if you’re not willing to practice and do the work, even the best advice is worthless. It actually works against you because you judge yourself based on what you know and not on what you can do. And that’s trouble!

So, whatever journey you're on, if you need a little guidance on how to, as Mushashi says, “polish [your] particular way," I recommend you step into the cave, pull up a rock, and join Musashi by the fire. It might just be the greatest private lesson you’ll ever have.
