Today the age of the Vikings is deeply embedded into our pop culture through Hollywood movies and television shows on streaming services. The History Channel’s hit historical fantasy series Vikings has run for over five seasons and is not the only show that depicts the lives of these notorious and heroic raiders.

In reality, the life of a Viking was no fantasy ride. It was harsh and filled with turbulent wars and brutality. They were called the Dark Ages for a reason, and the Vikings certainly lived a life of hardship where pillaging and plundering wasn’t a choice but a necessity.
