Miyamoto was born in 1584 in Harima province,Japan.

Training from a very young age in the way of the sword, Miyamoto had his first duel at the age of 13 against a Samurai called Arima Kihei, killing him in the process.

Perhaps the most famous of his duels and the one that cemented his legacy came in the form of his greatest rival. A Samurai by the name of Sasaki Kojirō. Considered Miyamoto's equal. A duel was agreed between the two of them.

There are varying accounts but according to historians it is believed that Miyamoto showed up several hours late as a sign of disrespect.
Miyamoto had also decided to use a bokken (wooden sword) for the duel.

Sasaki was angry and charged Miyamoto, swinging his sword almost killing him and actually cutting off Miyamoto’s headband in the process.
However as he attacked, Miyamoto cleaved Sasaki’s head, killing him.

Miyamoto is said to have remained undefeated in some 60 duels.
He would go on to write the book of the five rings based on the practice of martial arts. Eventually he would die with sword in hand sitting upright in 1645.
