Have you ever heard of Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)?
This powerful and concentrated form of cannabis oil has been making waves in the natural health community for decades due to its potential to relieve many ailments, from chronic pain and anxiety to cancer and multiple sclerosis.
But what exactly is RSO, and how does it work?
In this episode of Ask the Garden Sage, professional grower David Robinson gives us the true meaning of Rick Simpson oil.

History of Rick Simpson Oil
The story of Rick Simpson Oil begins with its namesake, Rick Simpson, a Canadian engineer diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma in 2003. His research led him to the effects of cannabis oil on cancer cells in mice.
He was already using medical marijuana to relieve the dizziness and tinnitus symptoms he experienced after a head injury, so he knew about the plant’s medicinal power.
He created a crude cannabis extract (RSO), applied a dab to his cancerous spots, and covered them with bandages. After a few days, the bandages were removed, and the growths were gone.
He soon shared his discovery with others and became a passionate advocate for using RSO as a natural remedy.
What Is Rick Simpson Oil?
Unlike most other oils, which contain only trace amounts of the active ingredients found in cannabis, RSO, also known as Phoenix Tears, is made with a high concentration of THC and other cannabinoids.
This makes it much more potent than other oils and gives it the ability to deliver fast and effective relief from various conditions. This crude and strong cannabis oil is made using cannabis flowers and ethanol.
“Rick Simpson Oil is simply cannabis oil,” said the Garden Sage. In essence, any full-spectrum cannabis oil contains high concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes, just like RSO, which provides numerous health benefits.
Benefits of RSO
RSO is made from highly concentrated forms of cannabinoids, which are the active compounds in cannabis that are responsible for its therapeutic effects. Some of the potential benefits of RSO include the following:
Pain relief
Anxiety and depression
Inflammation
Cancer
Nausea
Seizures
How to Use RSO
If you’re considering using RSO, it’s important to understand how to use it properly to ensure you get the best results. Here are some general guidelines for using RSO:
Dosage: RSO is very potent, and a little goes a long way. Start with a small dose, such as the size of a grain of rice, and gradually increase as needed. Follow the recommended dosage guidelines to avoid adverse effects.
Method of consumption: RSO can be consumed in several ways, including orally, sublingually (under the tongue), or topically. If you’re taking RSO orally, you can place it directly under your tongue or mix it with food or drink. If you’re using RSO topically, apply it directly to the skin.
Timing: RSO takes time to take effect, and the effects may last several hours. Wait at least an hour before taking more to avoid over-medicating.
Storage: Store RSO in a cool, dark place to preserve its potency.
It’s important to note that everyone is different and may respond differently to RSO. Some people may experience positive results quickly, while others may take longer to see results.
If you’re considering using RSO, talk to your doctor, especially if you’re taking other medications or have a serious health condition.
Side Effects of RSO
As a potent form of cannabis, RSO may produce some side effects, including:
Drowsiness
Dizziness
Dry mouth
Red eyes
Changes in appetite
Anxiety
Depression
Paranoia
Irritability
Confusion
Sleeping issues
Impaired memory
Decreased motor control
Increased heart rate
