Set five years after The Last of Us (2013), the game focuses on two playable characters in a post-apocalyptic United States whose lives intertwine: Ellie, who sets out for revenge after suffering a tragedy, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult.

The Last of Us is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic television series that is set to air on HBO. Based on the 2013 video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog, the series will follow Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. It will also feature Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Joel's younger brother and a former soldier.

The series, said to be the largest television production in Canadian history, began filming in Calgary, Alberta, in July 2021 and is expected to end in June 2022. It is the first HBO series to be based on a video game, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games. The first season will consist of ten episodes written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann; the latter wrote and directed the game. Original game composer Gustavo Santaolalla will compose the score, and Kantemir Balagov will direct the pilot episode. The first season is expected to debut in 2023.
