BARBIE is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig that dominated the box office in 2023 thanks to clever marketing and a longing for unappologetically girly stories. It’s also a two-hour ad for the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. They embark on a journey of self-discovery from the utopian Barbie Land to the Real World. America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell appear in supporting roles.

OPPENHEIMER is a 2023 somber biopic directed by Christopher Nolan. It is based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin about controversial scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who helped develop the first nuclear weapons on the Manhattan Project. The film stars Cillian Murphy as Openheimer. The supporting ensemble cast includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.

BARBENHEIMER was an online, meme-based phenomenon that boosted both Barbie and Oppenheimer box office performances, not despite their very different natures and, suppsedly, target audiences, but because of it. It brought to light the true maning of counter programming: not trying to hurt other movie’s expectations, but playing to all your movie’s strenghts and what makes each one unique and worth watching.

TITANIC is a 1997 romantic disaster film written and directed by James Cameron. It was the most expensive film at the time and the most succesful one, to the point liking Titanic became so uncool. This hate for the movie, that fictionalizes real accounts of the RMS Titanic sinking in 1912, sprout a trend of harsh divide between popular movies and serious movies. The opposite of the Barbenheimer phenomenon. The film starts Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet as star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose. Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Bernard Hill, Jonathan Hyde, Danny Nucci, David Warner and Bill Paxton complete the cast in supporting roles.
