Bringing Darwin Into The 21st Century |
|
This is part of the Secular Hub's regular science program, recorded February 8, 2020 at the Secular Hub in Denver, Colorado. This event was celebrating the 7th birthday of the Secular Hub and the 211th birthday Charles Darwin!
Theodosius Dobzhansky said “Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution”. Dr. Leland Shapiro responds that “very little in biology makes sense in light of evolution.” In a presentation designed for lay-persons, Dr. Shapiro will describe several inconvenient truths that cast serious doubt about the value of evolution as a scientific theory. Darwin's Theory of Evolution was articulated in the 19th century and has enjoyed perennial popularity. But how good of a scientific theory is evolution as it is currently expressed? Scientific theories are judged by their predictions and empirical success. In light of modern biological discoveries, Darwin's Theory appears anemic, incomplete, and overdue for a scientific re-evaluation. Dr. Leland Shapiro will discuss the difficulties of evolution as a scientific theory, and what shape a modern scientific theory of evolution might take. Leland Shapiro, MD, grew up in the Boston area. He majored in philosophy and psychology as an undergraduate and continued his graduate studies in philosophy, both at Tufts University. He then attended the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has had a Chief Medical Residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the New England Medical Center in Boston. He is currently on the faculty of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a staff physician at the Denver VA Medical Center. https://www.SecularHub.org |
