Eurozone finance ministers are going to elect the new president of the Eurogroup this Thursday, in a videoconference meeting that marks Mário Centeno's European farewell and Minister João Leão's debut.
The third contender is Luxembourg’s finance minister Pierre Gramegna, but only two candidates will make it to the final round of voting and his chances appear slimmer.

The winner will take over from Portugal’s Mario Centeno on 13 July for a mandate of two and a half years, a term that can only be extended once.

After Centeno announced, in June, his departure from the Government and, consequently, abdicated from running for a second term, three ministers advanced with candidacies for the presidency of the informal forum of finance ministers of the euro zone: the Spanish Nadia Calviño, the Irish Paschal Donohoe and Luxembourgish Pierre Gramegna.

With Centeno considering that this is an “excellent set of candidates” for the presidency of the Eurogroup, which demonstrates the current relevance of the forum in terms of ensuring the stability and prosperity of the euro area, Portugal has already announced, unsurprisingly, that the her vote, which will already be cast by João Leão - in office since June 15 -, will go to the Spanish socialist candidate.
