The Fire Support Officer, or FSO for short, leads a section of 4-10 highly trained Soldiers, working directly for the maneuver commander during combat and training operations to support the maneuver commander to accomplish their mission, providing overwhelming lethality to set conditions for a the company to fight and win in the close fight. The Company FSO is assigned to the Field Artillery BN, under the functional supervision of the Maneuver Battalion FSO. The FSO and his Fire Support Non-Commissioned Officer (FSNCO) create the FS plan based on the maneuver commander's intent. The FSO plans, coordinates, synchronizes and executes joint fire support on behalf of the supported maneuver company. The FSO must ensure that the maneuver commander gets the full use of the fire support assets available to the Company in every phase of the battle. They inform the maneuver commander on the capability and limitations of each weapon system while advising proper use and employment of those assets. Some of these assets include: FA Cannons, MLRS, HIMARS, and mortar assets as well as Close Air Support (CAS) and Army Attack Aviation (AAA) The Fire Support team is embedded with maneuver units at the company level and allows FSO’s the opportunity to build and maintain relationships with Officers, NCO’s, and Soldiers from across the force. As an FSO you will have the opportunity to serve as part of Infantry, Armor, and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. Also units such as Special Forces Groups (SFG) and the 75th Ranger Regiment. Wherever there is a maneuver formation, there is a Field Artillery Fire Supporter at their side. Thanks for watching!
