UN General Assembly shines spotlight on ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas

video thumbnail
The United Nations General Assembly is currently in session discussing the ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas centred around the densely populated Gaza Strip. Israeli airstrikes and indiscriminate Hamas rocket fire has continued for more than a week, as diplomatic pressure on the parties has to date failed to produce a cessation in hostilities that could lead to a more formal ceasefire. The Secretary-General called on the international community to do everything in their power to enable the parties to step back from the brink while other officials lamented the inaction of the Security Council as undermining the UN's credibility as a whole.
