Mastoidectomy, Tympanoplasty, Myringoplasty, Ear Surgery, Repair of eardrum, Cholesteatoma surgery
Ear surgeries are commonly performed for Ear infections, torn ear drum, impaired hearing, ear pain and persistent ear discharge.
They may be performed under Local or General Anaesthesia.
There are different approaches to the ear - the surgery may be performed through the ear canal (Permeatal), behind the ear (Post Aural) or from the front of the ear (Endaural).
This largely depends on the nature of the disease and personal preference of the surgeon.
After an ear surgery is performed the surgeon ties a mastoid bandage over the ear - to keep the wound safe and dry.
Once you are discharged from the hospital please keep the following points in mind.
Danger signals - where you must contact the doctor immediately -
- pain that increases in spite of medication
- excessive bleeding
- giddiness
- loss of power in muscles on operated side of the face- facial paralysis
- high fever
- sudden loss of hearing in the operated ear (ear feels dead)
Medication
- Please take medication as advised , including an antibiotic and other supportive medication
To be Expected after an ear surgery
- Spotting / bleeding- just cover the bandage with some fresh cotton
- feeling of wetness in the ear
- feeling of numbness , heaviness in the ear
- feeling of blockage in the ear
Precautions to be taken
- do not let your ear get wet- this is most important
- avoid jerky movements of the neck - this could impact the reconstruction work inside your ear
- avoid air travel for at least 3 weeks after an ear surgery - take your doctor's permission before flying
- do not exercise vigorously for at least a week after the surgery
DIET
- Eat normal, simple home food, food that you have every day. You can have milk, curd etc if you like. Avoid very spicy food or very cold items.
