Chief Oceans Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund

Douglas N. Rader, Ph.D. is Chief Oceans Scientist for Environmental Defense Fund, a leading environmental not-for-profit organization. He brings his decades of experience and scientific expertise to his role of advising EDF leadership on the scientific aspects of policies and programs affecting oceans around the world. He works with regional, national and global teams to leverage cutting-edge science in current Oceans Program projects and emerging ocean issues. His efforts include stronger fisheries management policies and programs that align conservation with the business of fishing, improved coastal habitat protection programs, and science-based networks of marine protected areas. He has served on a wide variety of fishery management and ocean advisory committees. Prior to joining EDF, Doug worked in various governmental scientific and management positions. His academic training took place at the University of North Carolina and the University of Washington. Doug is an avid scuba diver and amateur archeologist, with a focus on colonial period landscapes.
