Being an Ally Means Sometimes Standing Back |
|
What I’ve noticed in a lot of efforts recently is that non-Black people want to be front-and-center of pro-Black efforts. I’m being asked to speak on panels about Black civil rights where I’m the only Black person on the panel or I’m attending events designed to celebrate Black excellence and the MC is White. While I believe people’s intentions are solid and good- they actually counter the message. By needing to be in charge or be very present in events for and about Black folks is ironic and borders on insulting. Real Allyship will require people to rethink their roles. Good people may assume that they should be in charge or very visible because they always have been. Black people don’t just want an invitation to sit at someone else’s table. #allyship #allies #inclusion #blackenpowerment #whiteallyship
