Living Longer: Experts Discuss the Science of Aging and Longevity

video thumbnail
Biomedical science has made huge strides over the past few decades to understand how aging works in the human body. New scientific understandings have drastically impacted how we work to prevent disease and increase longevity.

For the Vanderbilt School of Medicine Basic Sciences’ monthly virtual Lab-to-Table Conversation on November 30, 2021, national aging research expert and Vanderbilt alumna Dr. Laura Niedernhofer, MD, PhD, director of the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism and professor of biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics at University of Minnesota discussed longevity research with panelists:

Rafael Arrojo e Drigo, PhD– assistant professor of molecular physiology and biophysics at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine Basic Sciences,

Kris Burkewitz, PhD – assistant professor of cell and developmental biology at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine Basic Sciences, and

Dr. Laura Dugan, MD, Abram C. Shmerling, MD Chair in Alzheimer's and Geriatric Medicine and professor of medicine at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The panel discussed questions such as: what is our current understanding of the biology of longevity? What is cutting-edge research showing, and where is it leading? How can individuals incorporate these understandings into their own day-to-day lives?
