In the year 9 A.D. three roman legions under the command of Publius Quinctilius Varus were ambushed and destroyed by a coalition of germanic tribes in the forests of Germania Magna. The tribes were lead by Arminius, a former roman officer, who was taken and raised by the Romans as a child, but changed sides again to free his people from roman rule.
