What is the key to a happy, long and healthy life? Is there a secret or magic recipe? According to Robert Waldinger, the answer lies in so-called "secure attachment relationships." Waldinger is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and for years has been leading the longest study ever conducted on happiness and well-being in people's lives. It is the Harvard Medical School's 'Adult Development Study'. After more than eighty years of interviewing hundreds of people, the findings of this research are astonishing. As Dr. Waldinger explains: "People with better relationships live longer, are happier and in better health". In other words, interpersonal relationships are a key player not only in our happiness, but also in our physical health and longevity. "For any person, it is essential to have at least one or two trusting and secure relationships in life," adds Waldinger. According to this study, being active in our social relationships gives us a sense of belonging, trust and "secure attachment," something that regulates our stress levels and can even prevent the development of diseases such as diabetes or heart disease. "Spending quality time with people we care about, or with whom we have a common hobby, is essential to feeling fulfilled and taking care of our health," concludes Waldinger. This impressive research spanning more than eight decades is brought together in his book 'A Good Life' (2023), written hand in hand with his research partner, and friend, Marc Schulz.
