This renowned paediatric oncologist shares his deep insight on the difference between curing and healing.

Living, dying and modern medicine. What happens when these hit close to home? What changes must we face when a child's life is touched by illness? And what is the difference between curing and healing? Among Canada's most respected figures in paediatric oncology, Dr. Mark Greenberg has been grappling with these issues at all levels, from deeply personal to difficult policy, for decades.

A self-described "merchant of mercy", Mark has touched the lives of thousands of families with children who are living with (and dying of) cancer. He is recognized internationally as an outstanding opinion regarding complex oncology problems and as an advocate for children with cancer and their families. His research includes long-term overall and specific outcomes, quality of care for children treated for childhood cancer, and interventions to mitigate those outcomes.

Through most of the 1990s, Mark was Chief of Oncology at The Hospital for Sick Children, and for the next decade he co-chaired the national Canadian Childhood Cancer Surveillance and Control Program. Today, Mark is a senior advisor and past medical director of the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO). He is also the senior staff oncologist at The Hospital for Sick Children. He received the Order of Canada in 2001.
