Obesity is a growing health problem in our society and its treatment has been challenging. 4 in 10 adults in the United States are affected by obesity and nearly 1 in 10 Americans have severe obesity. Obesity can lead to insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia is associated with complications such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and reduces life expectancy. Although lifestyle interventions are the cornerstone of weight management, sustaining weight loss over the long term is challenging. Clinical guidelines suggest adjunctive pharmacotherapy, particularly for adults with obesity, but the use of available medications remains limited by modest efficacy, safety concerns, and cost. In this video, we are going to learn about Wegovy, a new drug that leads to an average of 15% weight loss in people with obesity over the course of a 68-week phase 3 clinical trial, making it the first anti-obesity drug approved by the FDA since 2014. Obesity is a chronic disease and global public health challenge. We are also going to learn about Novo Nordisk, the company that has developed this drug, as well as how the drug actually works.
