11-year-old CJ Jasme was in his family home in Baybay City in the Philippines’ Leyte province on April 15, 2022, when a landslide overtook his home. As dirt and rocks poured into his family’s kitchen, CJ hid inside a broken refrigerator, where he reportedly stayed for 15+ hours before being rescued the next day.

CJ was seriously injured in the landslide, reportedly suffering from a broken leg that required surgery, but he is now reportedly in stable condition.

CJ’s older brother reportedly escaped the landslide, while his mother and younger sibling were still missing as of April 22, 2022. His father was killed in a separate landslide on April 14, 2022, the day before CJ was carried away in the refrigerator.

The landslide was caused by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Megi. Since April 10, 2022, flooding and landslides have killed more than 170 people and displaced more than 2 million.
