In Episode 10 of Making Apocalypse Now, we take a look at the making of one of cinema’s most epic battle scenes–the Ride of the Valkyries Sequence. Aside from the complex logistics of putting together a helicopter assault sequence in the middle of a small rural village in the Philippines, there were endless problems with fires, communication issues, copyright, and constantly having the helicopters called away to fight rebels. It’s incredible that Francis Ford Coppola, Vittorio Storaro (Cinematographer), Dean Tavoularis (Production Designer), and Walter Murch (Editor) managed to pull off an intense sequence that has taken its place as one of the most memorable battles in cinema history.
