Russia's invasion of Ukraine is making countries around the world think hard about their own safety. If Putin or another authoritarian leader were to do what Putin did in Ukraine, how would they defend themselves? In the Asia Pacific region, Japan has been worried about a similar threat from China for some time. China has vowed to take its island neighbor Taiwan by force if necessary. Taiwan sits less than 70 miles from Japan's territory, which is why Japan has been warning that a threat to Taiwan is a threat to Japan's national security as well.
