The South Korean K2 Black Panther main battle tank is armored using modular composite armor of a type unknown to many and Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) blocks.
The frontal armor was claimed to be resistant to a direct hit from the tank's 120 mm shell, which was fired from the L55 gun. The Black Panther tank is also equipped with an active protection system and countermeasures system. The tank is also equipped with an NBC protection system.
Even the K2 has general protection similar to the M1A2 Abrams considering that the K2 is significantly lighter. The Black Panther is armed with a Rheinmetall 120 mm/L55 smoothbore gun. This weapon is manufactured under license in South Korea.
The K2 Black Panther is equipped with an automatic loader. This Main Battle Tank (MBT) or Main Battle Tank has a maximum rate of fire of 15 rounds per minute. It is worth mentioning that the autoloader is similar to that used on the French Leclerc main battle tank. A total of 16 rounds are stored in the autoloader. The remaining 24 rounds are stored in the hull.
This Military Vehicle also has a highly advanced fire control system, enabling it to track and engage not only main battle tanks, but also low-flying helicopters. Maximum effective firing range is up to 10 kilometers.
Furthermore, its fire control system can sight, track, and fire automatically at visible vehicle-size targets without requiring any input from a human operator. The 120 mm gun can fire a variety of ammunition. It is compatible with all standard NATO tank shells.
The battle tank is capable of firing the new KSTAM (Korean Smart Top-Attack Munition) shell. It is a smartly activated target fire-and-forget projectile, but not to be confused with an anti-tank guided missile.
The KSTAM is assisted by four stabilizing fins. In the final stage, the parachute will be deployed to slow down the fall and accurately strike the target. The principle is broadly similar to that of mortar-launched anti-tank munitions. Furthermore the K-2 tank can fire KSTAM ammunition from behind cover. The KSTAM has a maximum effective range of 8 kilometers.
Secondary armament consists of a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun and a 12.7 mm K6 heavy machine gun, mounted on a roof. Both machine guns have very respectable ammunition loads (12,000 x 7.62 mm and 3 200 x 12.7 mm). The K6 heavy machine gun has an automatic system, which identifies friend from foe.
Even this main battle tank has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver. Other features of the K2 tank include a digital battlefield management system and a navigation system for quick coordination. K2 can quickly report the situation of the battle, thereby increasing the situational awareness of friendly forces.
