Aamir Khan is one of the few method actors in Bollywood, who has taken acting to a whole new level. An actor, director, and producer he has established himself as one of the leading actor of hindi cinema. Aamir was born on 14th March 1965 in Mumbai to a Muslim family that has been actively involved in the Indian motion picture industry for several decades. His father Tahir Hussain was a film producer while his uncle Nasir Hussain was a film producer, as well as a director and an actor. Aamir Khan starting his career as a child actor at the age of 8 named Ratan in his uncle Nasir Hussain's film Yaadon Ki Baaraat in 1973. Aamir Khan began his professional career eleven years later with Holi in 1984 and had his first commercial success with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988 which was directed by his cousin Mansoor Khan. Having the typical 'chocolate hero' looks, he was publicised as a teen idol. Aamir Khan went on to appear in several other films Dil, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke(for which he also wrote the screenplay), Andaz Apna Apna and Rangeela. Most of these films were commercially successful and critically acclaimed. He received his first National Film Award as a Special Jury Award for his roles in the films Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Aamir Khan received his first Filmfare Award for the best Actor for his performance in Raja Hindustani. In 1997, Aamir Khan co-starred with Ajay Devgan and was paired opposite Juhi Chawla in the film Ishq. After that Aamir Khan appeared in the moderately successful Ghulam, in which he sang the hit song "Aati Kya Khandala". Sarfarosh and Earth 1947 were Aamir Khan's releases in 1999. His first release for the new millennium Mela, in which he acted along his real-life brother Faisal Khan but Mela failed at the box office. In 2001 he appeared in Lagaan which was also his first home production. The film was received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards. The success of Lagaan was followed by Dil Chahta Hai which was directed by Farhan Akhtar. After a long break in 2005 Aamir Khan returned with Mangal Pandey, and then Rang De Basanti where Aamir Khan again won a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his role. The following year, he made his directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par, for which he received the Filmfare Award for best director. This was followed by the thriller Ghajini, which became the highest grossing film of that year. Aamir Khan launched his nephew Imran Khan in film from his production house Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. In 2009 Aamir Khan appeared in the commercially and critically acclaimed film 3 Idiots as Rancho. The Rajkumar Hirani directed film went on to become Bollywood's highest grossing film. In 2010 Aamir Khan released the critically acclaimed film Peepli Live. Aamir returned with Dhobi Ghat written and directed by his wife Kiran Rao in 2011. His home production Delhi Belly with his nephew Imran Khan released in July 2011, Aamir Khan will be seen in Talaash next, in which Aamir Khan plays the role of a cop. Now he will be playing a negative character in Dhoom 3 opposite Katrina Kaif.
The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010 for his contributions towards the arts.
