|
Do you think the media you consume affects how you view yourself and even what careers you consider? When Abby Govindan saw a more diverse representation of her background in her favorite TV shows it helped support her decision to pursue a career in comedy. She explains how the power of our voices can elevate the people and stories we want to see the most in the media and push Hollywood in the right direction so that everyone can see a character on screen who looks like them and is complex and worthy of love.
Abby Govindan is a comedian and recent graduate of Fordham University. She is an aspiring television writer and advocate for diversity in TV and film. She got her start in comedy at the young age of 20 and made her debut in New York City. Her comedic ingenuity was bolstered when she went viral online seemingly overnight. Today, she continues to perform comedy all over the country. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
