(15 Oct 2018) ANDREA RISEBOROUGH ON WORKING WITH HARVEY WEINSTEIN: 'THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE WAS A DIFFICULT ONE'
A year on from the first sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, British actress Andrea Riseborough has been speaking about the disgraced movie mogul.
"This time last year, the Harvey (Weinstein) stuff broke.  I'd done a couple red carpets, you know, night after night when it had broke.  You know, it was a really weird, just confusing, sad, not unexpected in my opinion, time, as well as it being relief, you know.  And this year there are so many of the same problems," said Riseborough, speaking to The Associated Press Thursday (11 OCT. 2018).
The British actress has described anger over the allegations as a great catalyst for change.
Riseborough is a leading member of the Time's Up movement in the U.K., which aims to help fight sexual harassment in the film industry and other workplaces.  She has previously stated that she has experienced sexually inappropriate behavior in the entertainment industry on a weekly basis.
She is one of a number of actresses including Emma Watson, Keira Knightley and Jodie Whittaker who set up the Justice and Equality Fund, which has given more than one million pounds (GBP) to women's groups across the U.K.
The 36-year-old actress says getting more women into the film industry is essential to correct the imbalance of the sexes on set, to create a healthy environment and a workplace that reflects the demographic of the country.
"You know, somebody in Time's Up in the US recently in a meeting said, 'It's unnatural to walk into a place of work and not to see yourself represented even if that's become the norm.'  And of course, country to country there are going to be different demographics so that makes total sense.  But when, you know, when it's really heavily one way or the other, I think the workplace can start to lack an important perspective and balance, and it can just not be a very nice environment for whichever is the minority, the unrepresented," said Riseborough.
She recalled her last experience working on a Weinstein set.
"I remember having this moment on set: it was like the whole, the whole experience from beginning to end was a difficult one.  It was a really, really, really male-heavy crew and my character was in a particularly vulnerable situation.  And I had actually asked why there weren't any women on set and the First A.D. told me that it's a tough industry.  I'm not entirely sure what that meant," she said.
Riseborough appears in the upcoming TV mini-series "Waco," and has previously starred in "Black Mirror," "Battle of the Sexes," The Death of Stalin," "Birdman" and "Nocturnal Animals."
Weinstein, the co-founder of The Weinstein Company film studio, was sacked following the allegations against him.
Prosecutors in New York City abandoned part of their sexual assault case against Harvey Weinstein last Thursday after evidence surfaced that a lead police detective coached a witness to keep quiet when she raised doubts about the veracity of one of the allegations.
A judge agreed to dismiss the lone charge related to Lucia Evans, who helped spark the #MeToo movement a year ago when she told The New Yorker that the 66-year-old Hollywood mogul had forced her to perform oral sex in 2004 when she was a college student and fledgling actress.
