The Designed World | Chris Tweed | TEDxCardiff |
![]() |
Everything around you is designed. Chris's recent research focuses on how people respond to systems designed by others to reduce energy consumption.
Chris Tweed is Professor of Sustainable Design and Head of the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA). His interests and experience span architecture, anthropology, philosophy and technology. After first studying architecture, he has spent his working life researching diverse topics in and around the built environment, beginning with developing energy simulation software at the WSA. He moved to Edinburgh to work on design software and intelligent systems, working alongside researchers in artificial intelligence and cognitive science. This has led to an enduring interest in how people interact with the designed world, which first emerged as a graduate programme he taught at Carnegie Mellon University. These interests have surfaced in different guises in projects as diverse as investigating assistive technologies for the elderly, work at BT Labs on the internet of things, and studies of how people perceive built cultural heritage in cities. www.cardiff.ac.uk/archi This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
