Terry Venables: A Football Legend’s Life and Legacy

video thumbnail
Former England manager Terry Venables has passed away at the age of 80 after a long battle with illness. Venables was best known for masterminding England’s memorable run to the semi-finals of Euro '96, a run that included victories over Scotland and Holland. He also guided Crystal Palace from the third division to the first in the late 1970s and took QPR to the 1982 FA Cup final as a second-tier outfit.

In this video, we will look back at the life and career of Terry Venables, who was a brilliant player and manager for several clubs and countries. We will also hear from some of his former colleagues, players, and fans who paid tribute to him after his death.

Venables won the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1991 but is best remembered for being England’s manager for their run to the semi-finals of Euro '96 on home turf. Overcoming pre-tournament scandal when Paul Gascoigne and others were photographed drunk in a Hong Kong nightclub, the Three Lions achieved unforgettable wins over Scotland and Holland.

Venables would later coach Australia, Palace a second time, Middlesbrough alongside Bryan Robson and Leeds, before returning to the England set-up as part of Steve McClaren’s staff. The League Managers’ Association (LMA) expressed its deep sadness at the passing of Venables and extended condolences to his wife, Yvette, his close family, and friends.

Born in Dagenham, east London, Venables was nurtured by his love of football and played for several clubs, including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Queens Park Rangers. He retired in 1974 due to arthritis.

England football legend George Venables, who represented England at various levels, won only two caps in 1964. He joined Malcolm Allison’s coaching staff at Selhurst Park and succeeded him as manager in 1976. Venables built a successful Palace side, dubbed the ‘team of the Eighties’ by the media. They won promotion to the second division in 1976-77 and two years later became champions. Venables’ team briefly topped the Football League but propped up the division when he departed for QPR in 1980. He then took Rangers to the first division as champions in 1983 and then to Barcelona, where he guided them to their first league title in 11 years and a Copa del Rey final. Venables returned to England in 1987 and helped them to the 1991 FA Cup. He later moved as chief executive following Alan Sugar’s takeover at White Hart Lane. Venables’ coaching career continued with Australia and back at Palace, but without the earlier success. He coached Middlesbrough alongside Robson and was in charge of Leeds. In 2014, Venables and his second wife Yvette opened a boutique hotel and restaurant in Penaguila, Spain.
