It’s that time of the year again. It comes earlier every year. It’s time for the 5,000th Academy Awards! Or maybe it’s the 95th, we’ve lost count. Whatever - it’s Oscar time. The period of the year where everybody in Hollywood gets really hot and bothered over the contents of various golden envelopes. The slate this year stretches from quirky indie Davids (or should that be Daniels) like Everything Everywhere All At Once, to establishment Goliaths like Steven Spielberg (who you may remember from Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Spotlight, uh, and loads of others) and his ode to childhood, divorce and the magic of the movies, The Fabelmans. We’ve got Brendan Fraser’s big comeback, The Whale. A potential crown jewel on the Year of Michelle Yeoh. Colin Farrell is in the running for best portrayal of a sad and slightly clueless Irish guy.

Basically, it’s celebrating movies time! Which means it’s time for us armchair cinema scientists to predict who’s gonna win what. To say it’s an exact science would be a lie - but we’re going to give it the old college try anyway.

So grab your popcorn, sit back, and join our totally unqualified crew for a fully subjective ride through this year’s contenders. Will there be any upsets? Will anybody pick the wrong name out of an envelope? Is Will Smith gonna do the funniest possible thing by showing up and slapping Chris Rock AGAIN?
