England fans said their team could win the World Cup after watching them thrash Iran 6-2 in Qatar, but supporters of their opponents wanted to talk politics, not soccer after the match.
The Three Lions made their best-ever start to a World Cup to raise hopes they could win the tournament for the first time since 1966.
But for Iranian fans, disappointment on the pitch was nothing compared to dealing with the political ramifications of the team not singing the national anthem at the start of the game.
Supporters also reported disputes among pro and anti-government groups within the stadium, while one fan said he was asked to put his pre-Islamic revolution flag and a t-shirt expressing support for protesters in Iran away.
Protests demanding the fall of the ruling Shi'ite Muslim theocracy have gripped Iran since the death two months ago of young woman Mahsa Amini after her arrest for flouting the strict Islamic dress code.
