Revisiting Māori sovereignty |

Kaikōrero: Donna Awatere Huata
Ringa Hāpai: Nik Coupe In 1981, after ten years of volatile activism with little to show for it, Donna Awatere Huata wrote Māori Sovereignty which asserted that the time had come to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and restore the power of Māori to control their resources, lives and destinies. Now in 2022, Donna revisits Māori Sovereignty, providing context with a summary of Māori resistance since colonisation, the emergence, work and experience of Ngā Tama Toa of which she was a founding member, to the realities of the current day. Donna states the key idea behind the book is how oppression is maintained through the racist idea of white superiority started with the Doctrine of Discovery. She then highlights the genius of Māori ancestry, expanding on 4 key components: Whakapapa, Rangatiratanga, Role of family, home, women and children, and Joy; the answer moving forward being the continued decolonisation of the colonised. Donna provides advice to Pākehā as allies to lead out the partnership debate and better utilise their privilege by launching major campaigns, and to Rangatahi of today to still enjoy life while deconstructing colonisation and standing up against microaggressions.
