Modulight Applications in Oncology |
|
About 40 percent of people are diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetime. We at Modulight make lasers for various applications in the field of oncology – fighting cancer by creating versatile laser systems for clinical use, as well as in-vivo and in-vitro studies.
One example of laser-assisted cancer treatment is photodynamic therapy, where a photoactivating drug is administered to the patient. The drug is activated by laser light hitting the absorption peak of that photosensitizing agent. Many cancer types can be treated with laser therapy. Non-small cell lung cancer is one of the examples. Laser treatments can be combined with resection or surgical removal of tumors. Glioblastoma is one example of such a treatment. The glioblastoma tumor is removed surgically and the margin areas are treated with laser, activating the cancer drug. Ophthalmic cancers can also be treated with laser. This treatment can be done at the ophthalmologist’s office, whereas conventional treatments require surgery. Also many other cancers are treated with photodynamic therapy, like esophageal cancer, peritoneal cancer, and prostate cancer. |
