Unboxing Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak |
|
808s & Heartbreak is the 4th studio album by Kanye West released in 2008. It went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US. It hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, where it charted for a total of 39 weeks. It contains the top 5 hits "Love Lockdown" and "Heartless." The album earned West a Grammy nomination. Conceived in the wake of a series of distressing personal events, the album marked a major musical departure for West from his previous hip hop albums. It featured electropop and R&B music and lyrics about personal loss, alienated fame, and heartache, sung by West using an Auto-Tune vocal processor. He eschewed conventional hip hop sounds in favor of a minimalist sonic palette, which included prominent use of Auto-Tune and the titular Roland TR-808 drum machine to create a distorted, electronic sound. The production and musical style of the album has been cited as an influence on later hip-hop, pop, and R&B artists. In the years following its release, a new wave of rappers, singers, and producers came to adopt aspects of its thematic content.
