रोहिणी या डिप्थीरिया (Diphtheria) उग्र संक्रामक रोग है, जो 2 से लेकर 10 वर्ष तक की आयु के बालकों को अधिक होता है, यद्यपि सभी आयुवालों को यह रोग हो सकता है। इसका उद्भव काल (incubation period) दो से लेकर चार दिन तक का है। रोग प्राय: गले में होता है और टॉन्सिल भी आक्रांत होते हैं।

गले में दर्द
बुखार
बीमार महसूस करना
झिल्ली ही रोग का विशेष लक्षण है। उपयुक्त चिकित्सा तत्काल प्रारंभ न करने से वह गले में चारों ओर से उत्पन्न होकर श्वास मार्ग तक को रोक सकती है, जिससे रोगी को श्वासकष्ट हो जाता है और फुफ्फुसों में वायु नहीं पहुँच पाती। गले में शोथ होता है। टाँन्सिल भी सूज जाते हैं। झिल्ली गले में न बनकर उसके नीचे श्वासनली (trachea) में बन सकती है। अग्रनासिका के आक्रांत होने पर नासास्राव विशेषतया अधिक होता है, किंतु श्वासकष्ट नहीं होता। नेत्र तथा जननेंद्रियों के रोग में उनपर झिल्ली एकत्र हो जाती है।

रोगी को ज्वर 100°F-102°F तक रहता है। रुधिर विषाक्तता के कारण रोगी क्लांत दिखाई देता है। रोग की उग्रता उसके चेहरे तथा साधारण दशा से झलक जाती है। सिरदर्द, अरुचि, कब्ज आदि बने रहते हैं।

डिपथीरिया के जीवविष हृतपेशीस्तर (myocardium) पर अपकर्षण (degeneration) प्रभाव डालते हैं। हृदय के दुर्बल हो जाने से उसके स्पंदन दुर्बल हो जाते हैं, जिससे शरीर का रक्तचाप कम हो जाता है। जितना हृद्दौर्बल्य बढ़ता है, रोगी के जीवन की आशा उतनी ही कम हो जाती है।

तंत्रिकातंत्र पर भी विषों का प्रभाव होता है। गले के भीतर की पेशियों का स्तंभ प्राय: 10वें या 12वें दिन पर दिखाई पड़ता है,
