Sweltering temperatures took its toll on the field, especially Ken Venturi. Given tea and salt tablets to combat dehydration between rounds on Saturday, the Californian was advised by a doctor to withdraw. Venturi, who had shot a third-round 66, eschewed the advice and his perseverance paid off, shooting a final-round 70 to win by four strokes over Tommy Jacobs. He was the first player to win a U.S. Open after going through both local and sectional qualifying.
