Perhaps the most important thing you can do when beginning a new conlang is to set a goal for it. Without one, it can become quite difficult for your language to do what you need it to. As an example, let’s check out David Peterson’s first conlang: Megdevi. It had a lot of awesome ideas, but ultimately he abandoned the project.
