On the second day of biggest lockdown ever in the human history, both the Central and state governments went into action to ensure that the essential commodities supply chain is well-oiled and sustains the colossal task of reaching out to nearly 130 crore Indians-- an overwhelming majority of whom remained within the walls of their houses. Amid reports of security forces cracking on those breaching the 21-day lockdown, there were shout-outs by many chief ministers asking their counterparts to ensure well-being of their state-subjects who remain stranded mostly under the open sky. Preparing for what Prime Minister Narendra Modi called ‘a long battle’ against the deadly virus, his government on Thursday initiated relief measures to deal with the impact of the lockdown and announced a ₹1.7 lakh crore package under ‘Garib Kalyan Yojana’ that would largely benefit unorganised sector workers, especially daily wage workers, and urban and rural poor.
