_____________________________________________ Dil Bechara (transl. The helpless heart) is an upcoming 2020 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age romantic drama film which is the directorial debut of Mukesh Chhabra. Based on John Green's 2012 novel The Fault in Our Stars,[2] it stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Saif Ali Khan and debutante Sanjana Sanghi, and was initially titled Kizie Aur Manny (transl. Kizie and Manny). Filming commenced on 9 July 2018 in Jamshedpur.[3][4] The film's release has been postponed multiple times, due to post-production delays and then again due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. It will release on 24 July 2020 on Disney+ Hotstar.[5] It features the last posthumous film performance by Rajput, who died in June 2020. The film will be released to all subscribers in his honour.[6] The film's official trailer, released on 6 July 2020, became the most liked trailer in the world within 24 hours of its release, beating Avengers: Endgame.[7]

Plot

Kizie Basu is fighting thyroid cancer when she meets Immanuel Rajkumar Junior or Manny, who has previously suffered from osteosarcoma[8] and is in remission. Kizie initially distances herself from Manny but they bond over movies and music[9] and eventually fall in love. As Kizie's health deteriorates, she and Manny go to Paris to fulfill her last wish of visiting the city.[10]

Mukesh Chhabra launched the film in October 2017, making his directorial debut and announcing that it is the film adaptation of John Green's 2012 novel The Fault in Our Stars, with Sushant Singh Rajput as the male lead.[12] In March 2018, A. R. Rahman was confirmed as the music composer. Later, newcomer Sanjana Sanghi was selected opposite Rajput and Sony Music India acquired the music rights, with Amitabh Bhattacharya as lyricist.[13]

Chhabra was suspended from his services after being accused of sexual harassment in October 2018.[14] Eventually he returned, after receiving clean chit from ICC on the allegations. This resulted in the delay of final schedule and completion of post-production.[15]

While the film was initially titled Kizie Aur Manny, in February 2019 the title was officially changed to Dil Bechara. This was felt to perfectly embody the theme and had been chosen from lyrics penned by Bhattacharya and composed by Rahman as one of the tracks in the film.[16]

Filming

Principal photography began on 9 July 2018 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.[17] On 29 August 2018, Farah Khan shot a song with Rajput. The few remaining portions in the last schedule were filmed across Paris, France.[18] This was later revealed to be the title song of the movie. Khan took no payment for choreographing the song, which was shot within a single take from Rajput after only one day of rehearsal.[19]

The film score and soundtrack are composed by A. R. Rahman with lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The music rights of this film has been bought by Sony Music India.[21] The title track of the film has been sung by Rahman; the title of the movie was changed to Dil Bechara in early 2019 because the lyrics of this song embodied the theme of the movie perfectly.[22] Chhabra had worked with Rahman on several films previously and wanted a fresh music album in his debut film for that he approached Rahman, whose film 99 Songs he was working as a casting director in. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama; when asked how Rahman was convinced take up the film, Chhabra revealed that Rahman agreed to compose film in just five minutes saying, "I love the way you do narrate to me and I like your honesty, let's do it."[23][better source needed] Rahman agreed to compose music in early 2018. This is Bhattacharya's third collaboration with Rahman, after Lekar Hum Deewana Dil and 2.0.[24] The track list was released by Rahman on his Twitter.
