Every time I think about this family, how Korra is Aang reborn and so everyone is technically one big family, I'm just reminded how rich and heartfelt this show is, how complex the characters are. I thought the best decision ever was Tenzin being the only airbender, and Bumi as the first born turning out not to be one. I find myself constantly thinking about growing up in such a dynamic, where your parents are heros and the pressure that must create. I imagine the moments in Bumi's youth where he must have cried himself to sleep, feeling he was a "disappointment". I think about the first time Tenzin must have met Korra and how overwhelming that must have been. I think about the relationship between Korra and Tenzin's kids, how on some level they are bounded because Korra and their grandfather are connected. I think about Katara deciding whether or not to teach Kya blood bending. How Tenzin must have felt when Jhnora did what he never could and led the avatar into the spirit world. We could have been presented with a completely happy family, spoon fed a happy ever after where Aang is the perfect dad and him and Katara are remembered fondly. But how amazing is it that we learn Aang played favorites, their kids are a little messed up and fight a lot, Tenzin is clueless and proud, his kids are sometimes over looked when he's helping the avatar, how wonderful it must have been for Aang to finally have a family again after losing his entire nation. They go through pain, but they still love each other. The fact that the creators gave that complexity is why I love this show. Things don't have to be perfect, you just gotta do better and be there for the people you love.
