The nominations for the 94th annual Academy Awards just have been announced and this year, the competition seems to be quite tough. With a total of 24 different categories, the academy of motion picture arts and sciences will honor the best work from each category on March 27, 2022. In the best picture category, 10 critically acclaimed movies from March 1 to December 31, 2021, are competing this year for this prestigious award of cinematic arts. The Power of the Dog is leading the nominations with 12 nods including one for best picture of the year. Other than that, Belfast Coda, Dune and don’t look up are also included. Drive my car is the only foreign language film competing for the best film award. The only remake worthy included in this category is West Side Story. The remaining three films are Nightmare Alley, King Richard, and Licorice Pizza. If we talk about the best director of the year, some familiar faces can be seen again like Steven Spielberg for directing West Side Story, Jane Champion for Power of the Dog, and Paul Thomas Anderson for directing Licorice Pizza. Kenneth Branagh earned his 2nd nomination for best director for Belfast. Drive my car’s director RyusukeHamaguchi is also in this competition for an Oscar award. In categories for best actor and best actress, only five celebrities are selected in both categories for their fabulous acting skills. The nominees for the best actor of the year are Javier Bardem for his acting in Being the Ricardos. Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance in the power of the dog has earned him a nomination for best actor. Andrew Garfield and Will Smith are nominated for their acting in Tick Tick BOOM and King Richard respectively. For playing the character of Macbeth in The Tragedy of Macbeth movie, Denzel Washington is selected for the best actor of the year category. In the best actress category, Jessica Chastain is nominated for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye movie. Olivia Colman’s performance in The Lost Daughter has made her selected for best actress alongside Penelope Cruz for Parallel Mothers. Kristen Stewart earned her first Oscar nomination this year for playing Princess Dianna in Spencer. For her amazing portrayal of Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos film, Nichole Kidman has also been selected for an Academy Award. For playing the supporting roles, five extraordinary actors have been selected for the Academy Award for best-supporting actor. These nominees are Clair Hinds for Belfast, Troy Kotsur for CODA, Jesse Plemons for the Power of the Dog, and J.K Simmons for his performance in Being the Ricardos. Kodi Smit-McPhee is the younger nominee for best supporting actor for his performance in the power of the Dog. For the category of best-supporting actress, the nominations are Jessica Buckley for The Lost Daughter, Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, Judi Dench for Belfast, Kristen Dunst for the power of the Dog, and Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard.
