Welcome to Priyanka Lalwani Music. Thank you for checking my channel!
About the song: This is a Cover of a Thumri by Shobha Gurtu from Goa in Raag Pahadi. Taal Dadra. Writer - composer unknown. Thumris are heavily based on Shringar(love/beauty) rasa(emotional state). They are a mixture of classical and folk music. Sringar rasa(romantic state of mind) involve feelings of sanyog (coincidence) and viyog (disconnection). Thumris are all about nakhra (flirtation) and nazakat (finesse) which are big elements of romance. Thumris were first recorded hundreds of years ago in 1800s. Imagine being a commoner on the streets of India in early 1800s, getting to hear a faint voice of a singer singing this amazing Thumri at a nearby palace. Palaces in the early 1800s weren’t sound proof so the sound used to bleed out of the royal courts and were heard by commoners on the streets. While making a cover of this song, I have maintained those sonic aesthetics. This cover is inspired from Shobha Gurtuji’s recordings. Taking elements essentially from the Purab style, she evolved a style that was very much her own. She brought to her recitals an intonation and an expressive quality that made her a much sought-after thumri performer. Thumri is North India’s most popular light-classical song form, developed during the 19th century at the court of Lucknow’s ruler Wajid Ali Shah. The thumri is a North Indian vocal form. It is based on the romantic-devotional literature inspired by the bhakti movement. The text is usually derived from the Radha-Krishna theme. The Thumri tend to be strongly text-led with words playing a more important part than music. In general, where Indian music is concerned, the more audible the words the less classical the musical form. The languages of thumri are old North Indian dialects like Purbi and Braj Bhasha(language of folks who live along the banks of a river). The thumri is heavily feeling based. Lyrics: Rangi saari gulabi chunariya re, Mohe maare nazariya sanwariya re. Jao ji Jao, karo na batiyan Eji baali hai mori umariya re. Translation: Having colored pink my entire stole/dupatta/scarf Krishna is making eyes at me. Go away, do not make (sweet) talk I am (still) underage. The lyrics are nearly always are in the female persona and allude to the many delicately nuanced emotions of a young woman who doesn’t feel entirely secure about her beloved, whether human or divine. The Thumri evokes in listeners these essentially feminine longings.
